Description
Mini weatherstation
Share
  • I designed and made this model for a schoolproject. We had to design a mini-weatherstation to use in a camper, a tent or on a sailboat. My weatherstation is to be used on a small sailboat.
The entire project was made possible by Radius Design (www.radiusholland.com)
  • This was the initial design, but due to some technical issues I had to adjust the shape of the legs.
  • This is an exploded view from the model.
  • The plug was made from polyurethanefoam and polystyrene.
  • We placed the plug on a stand so the vacuumfoil could wrap around the bottom of the plug as well.
  • We placed the plug on a cloth so air could escape through a hole in the wooden board.
  • The foil was vacuumpumped so it wrapped around the plug, giving it a smooth surface.
  • I impregnated the carbonfibres with an epoxy resin.
  • Then I covered the plug with the impregnated carbon fibres.
  • Again a cloth to improve air flow.
  • Then we put another vacuumfoil over the carbonfibre covered plug.
  • Vacuumpumped it so the outer surface of the model becomes smooth
  • Very smooth...
  • Very very smooth...
  • We let the model cure over a night and when we unwrapped the vacuumfoil this came out.
I drawed the shape on some masking tape so I know where to cut.
  • The I started cutting the model to shape, but the plug is still inside.
  • I removed the plug from the model by breaking it into small chunks which came out easily.
  • Adjusting the shape until it fitted perfectly on the stainless steel sphere, on a machined aluminium stand.
  • Then I cut out the display window.
  • Covered it with spray putty and sanded it smooth.
  • After priming it I sprayed the model in a light blue color.
  • Then I masked the parts that had to be blue before spraying it white.
  • After removing the maskingtape the model looked like this...
  • After giving the model its last clearcoat I installed a mock-up display.
  • The final step was a package for the model.
