  • The idea of interactive module-based lighting structure is embedded in this project for 2nd International Youth Sketch Design Competition "USEFUL MUTATION 2011"

The subject of "Useful mutation" is touched in different aspects of this project.
The use of parametric modeling and computational design approaches support this concept because variation of model structure parameters directly affects its formation and shape design. It means that changing the structure parameters allows you to perform systematic changes to the whole shape of object, as well as to the particular parts of it.
  • It should be highlighted that the first place is taken by developed "inner logic" of model, which can be applied to any surface, forming the final shape.
  • This approach ultimately allows to create module-based structure, that can be interpreted as some kind of kit for producing customized objects whether it would be a sample of product design (like the lamp presented here), or any spatial concept (for example in interior design).
  • As well as the "Mutation" available by virtue of parametric approach in modeling, the opportunity of interactive mutation is elaborated here. For example it is assumed that the structure will react on outer factors and change its shape and condition, performing a useful function.
  • The luminance radius is controlled by either increasing or decreasing the amount of turned-on modules, and the light intensity and its direction are regulated by the lamp elements 3d rotation angle. Besides, taking the particular module out of the nest you can place it in distance thereby transforming it into the targeted light source. It is also possible to perform this action to a bunch of modules in such way creating any kind of customized light compositions thanks to flexible hoses. And of course the programmed modes of elements position in space are also assumed.
  • Variations of light patterns are available, they can be either programmed, or interactive as well.
  • Technologically these fantasies become more and more closer to reality. The development of interective technologies makes possible even now to trace different type of data coming from any kinds of sensor sources, for example video capture with 3d depth like the "Kinect" which allows even to track finger gestures.
The same way, we can already use any kind of this sensor data (like such enviromental data as lighting, temperature etc.) to affect mechanics and interact with it with the help of microcontrollers such as "Arduino" or more serious controlleres for professional robotics.
