Description
Hearth was our competition contribution to the design contest Aluminiumdesign 2011. Hearth is a cookware series. The design is influenced by the shape of the rose-hip. The series features a three-legged stand in black anodized aluminum plate, cut and bent in one piece. The accompanying candle fixture holds a tea light that makes it possible to keep food warm. The stand has been supplemented with refractory serving bowls in stoneware. The open shape of the stand, the candle fixture and the serving bowls allow good stack ability, an important property both during transport and for storage in a shop or in a kitchen. The characteristic tripod is reminiscent of ancient times, in which people gathered around the seat of fire to eat and socialize. In the same manner we want to inspire people to see the meal as an opportunity for gathering.

  • Hearth was awarded Special Prize in the Aluminium Design Award 2011.
  • The overall shape is inspired by the rose-hip.
  • We love geometry. Therefor we started working from a topographic view with the geometric shape of the Star of David. The shape is a hexagram, which consists of two equilateral triangles.
  • We converted the six points to plateaus or flat lines. The colors represents two opposite directions (up and down) of which the different parts of the overall shape are to be transformed in three dimensions.
  • Sketches.
  • As like as two peas.
  • In the first 3d-sketches of Hearth we made the lower wings tilted inwards.
  • This 3d-sketch shows the bowl from above.
  • A great accuracy of fit was important to achieve, both for beauty, storing and stacking reasons.
  • We made a 3d-printed model to examine the properties of the shape in reality. As you can see we have changed the lower wings to be tilted outwards instead of inwards which of course improves both the visual stability of the shape and the physical stability of the product.
  • This pic shows the two final aluminum stands in different sizes with belonging bowls in stoneware. Beneath the larger stands you see the candle fixture with tea lights in.
