Kompis

Project Tools Project Info
Type: FORM WORKSHOP - INDUSTRIAL SOUND DESIGN (Umea Institute of Design)
Date: 2009 January
Description:
Group project of Regimantas Vegele and Francisco (Paco) Lindoro
We were asked to identify a product where the sound interface and characteristics are lacking or are of a poor design quality. Then work with the physical form and audio form. Work parallel with these two factors and strive to achieve a harmonious synthesis so that the resulting product and the sound it produces work as a unified whole. Analyze the sounds the product produces and discuss how these could be improved, and how the form (and function) should be related to a new sound. Furthermore, introduce lighting effects to increase the overall experience of the product usage.

KOMPIS works as a combination of a compass and a GPS unit. The top screen displays text or an icon. A circle bar around it indicates the direction of the chosen place. This way you can pick your own way how to get to a place of desire (no map displayed). The light changes from blue - far from object, to red - close (cold/hot). Directions can be chosen with a dial on top of the object. A new place is bookmarked by connecting it to a computer and using software or with a knob on the side (by moving and holding it for several seconds). In case of emergency, KOMPIS is recharged by rotating the dial on the back side of it. It can also be recharged by connecting it to a computer by a USB cable.
